“Neurodiversity is not about changing people; it’s about changing environments to fit the person.” — Nick Walker
This statement captures a fundamental shift from a deficit-based model to a strength-based, inclusive approach. Neurodivergence is not something to be “fixed,” but a natural variation in human cognition and experience. Many of the challenges faced by neurodivergent individuals arise not from their differences, but from environments that are not designed to accommodate them.
Within this context, psychoeducation becomes a cornerstone of effective counselling. Parents are not merely caregivers; they are the primary environment in which a child’s emotional, cognitive, and social development unfolds. By supporting parents in understanding neurodiversity, we facilitate a critical shift in perspective from attempting to change the child to learning how to support the child.
